Best fit trick

Measure a favorite garment, not your body.

What the numbers mean

Inches unless noted

Bust / chest

Measured flat from armpit to armpit, then doubled.

Waist

Measured straight across the garment waist, then doubled.

Hips

Measured across the fullest part of the garment, then doubled.

Shoulders

Measured seam to seam across the back.

Length

Measured from the highest shoulder point to the hem.

Sleeve

Measured from the shoulder seam to the cuff.

Rise

Measured from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband.

Inseam

Measured from the crotch seam down the inside leg.

Vintage sizing varies by era, maker, fabric, and alteration history. Use the actual garment measurements as the final word, even when an estimated size is shown.
